You have many volunteer opportunities. Why
tutor?
·
You improve someone’s life
immeasurably when you teach him or her to read or do math.
·
You contribute to the
improvement of the quality of life in the Detroit area.
·
You choose when you wish to
tutor, and whether it is reading or math.
·
You meet and get to know people
of other cultures.
·
You spend time with people who
love to learn.
As
a tutor, you will be paired with one adult learner to teach reading, math, or
English as a Second Language. The
subject choice will be yours. We
will provide texts, supplementary resources, and staff support to help you
teach. In addition, all tutors
have the opportunity to attend a no-cost training workshop to certify them as
a ProLiteracy America tutor.
This workshop is not a requisite to becoming a tutor, although it is a
worthwhile experience and highly recommended.
Tutor training workshops are offered twice each
year, in the spring and fall.

Quote
from tutor, Carol Plasha, Aug. 2006
Like most people, I just assumed that
everyone could read. Public
service announcement statistics on illiteracy really opened my eyes to the
reality of the problem. I
contacted ProLiteracy America and found out that if I could read I could
teach. I have been a tutor now
for almost a year and it is one of the most rewarding volunteer efforts I have
ever been involved with. My
students have been so very grateful for the opportunity to learn and my reward
has been in knowing that I played a small part in their accomplishments.
