Siena Literacy Center offers Adult Basic Education (ABE) and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs. Tutor/Adult Learner partners meet at the Center once a week for two hours. Partners meet weekly until the learner reaches his or her goals. In addition, learners are asked to spend additional time each week in the computer lab working on educational software to supplement their classwork. Tutoring is offered free of charge, following a $10 registration fee and purchase of the learner workbook. However, Siena Literacy Center will not deny services to learners regardless of ability to pay. We are committed to serve learners without regard to age, income, ethnicity, or citizenship status.
Adult Basic Education
Our (ABE) program is for English-speaking adults who read or do math at an eighth grade level or below. The Laubach Way to Reading® (LWR) method has proved effective for many of the Center’s adult learners; 65% move up a grade level or two within one year of beginning the program. We also use the Wilson Reading System® for readers having more difficulty learning. Volunteers tutor to the limits of their qualifications.
English as a Second Language
Our (ESL) program is for non-English-speaking adults who wish to improve their conversation, reading, and writing skills. Learners may prepare for the U.S. citizenship interview and test.
