Executive Director

Sister Janice Brown, O.P., is an Adrian Dominican Sister. She has been involved in adult education and the workforce training since 2005. Her background includes business, finance, education, and theology. Dr. Brown has both an MBA from Western Michigan University and a Doctorate in Ministry from the Catholic Theological Union. In addition to developing curriculum, Dr. Brown enjoys presenting on adult education including Adult Basic Education, Workforce Development, Student Motivation, Leadership Skills, and English Language Acquisition.



Bilal Khaled spent 30 years in the accounting, bookkeeping, financial and tax services field, primarily in administrative and business management. He has a Master's Degree in Business Accounting, a BS in Accounting, and a Math Diploma. Before joining Siena Literacy Center, he was an accounting and budgeting consultant & financial advisor for individuals and small businesses. In his spare time, Bilal is an active member of the local community who assists in education, medical causes, feeding the homeless, supporting poor families, and social communications.


Program Director

Rod is a Michigan native, growing up in Traverse City. After receiving his Ph.D. from Purdue University in medicinal chemistry and molecular pharmacology, Rod was a postdoctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Rod began his academic career teaching pharmacology and medicinal chemistry to pharmacy students in Tennessee, and then moved back to Michigan to teach medical students at Oakland University. After nearly a decade in higher education, Rod decided the non-profit sector was a better fit for his passions. He started volunteering as a tutor at Siena in 2019, and in 2020 he began helping in the office and with grant writing. He was ecstatic to join the staff in 2020, working closely with students and tutors as the placement coordinator. 


Computer Lab Manager

Abdualsalam is our Computer Lab Manager. Abdual provides support in the computer lab to learners and tutors. He also provides support in the registration and retention of new learners. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Siena Literacy Center. He is married and the father of seven beautiful children.


Reading and Special Projects Coordinator

Sr. Lenore has been with Siena Literacy Center since 2004, working as a tutor and a staff member. Currently she assists tutors who have adult learners with special learning needs. She taught in the elementary schools and following her teaching years, worked with adults and children for 40 years. Sr. Lenore has a BA in Education and an MA in Art Therapy. She loves to read, be creative, and listen to others.


Assessment and Data Management Coordinator

Employed at Siena Literacy Center since August 2002, Sr. Mary Anna is a Certified ProLiteracy Action Tutor. She has taught and administered in elementary schools for 35 years, has a Master's of Education degree and an Associate's degree in Occupational Therapy. Sr. Mary Anna really loves traveling, taking pictures, and cooking, especially creating new brunch dishes.


New Learner Academy Instructor

Derek has been an educator for more than 25 years, working with ABE, ESL, and GED students. He is a graduate from Spring Arbor University, and comes to Siena as New Learner Academy Instructor. Derek is pleased to have this opportunity to continue to educate and assist adult learners to accomplish their goals.




Jermaine Minor is the Building Custodian. Jermaine works to maintain Siena Literacy Center as a clean and welcoming place to visit. He is very helpful to staff, tutors, and learners and always has a warm smile or greeting for all who enter the building. He is very committed to doing a great job!


Program Support Associate

Katie has worked with students from children to adults in special education, social studies, math, phonics, and art programming. Other experience includes working in elder care, coordinating young adult volunteers, event planning, copy writing, and editing. She has a degree in journalism from the University of Florida.
